How to use a Canon DSLR camera as a webcam on PC / Laptop | Almost all major countries are closed due to the corona virus outbreak, millions of people around the world are forced to work from home. This in turn will increase meetings and video conferencing. The problem is that the webcams on most laptops are of poor quality which means the quality of video calls will be just as bad. As for the PC clearly does not have a webcam.
In either case, one can purchase a webcam from Logitech or another company to solve the problem. However, there was a surge in demand for webcams which led to a shortage of webcams in supply and their prices also increased dramatically.
If you are in a similar situation and have a Canon DSLR or PowerShot camera, you can use it as a webcam for your PC/laptop. You just need a miniUSB/microUSB or USB-C cable to connect your Canon camera to a PC and a utility from the company to turn their DSLR into a webcam.
Another benefit of using a Canon DSLR as a webcam is that it will offer superior video quality compared to your laptop’s webcam. So, if you are giving an online presentation or holding an online class, you should consider using your Canon DSLR as a webcam for the superior video quality it offers instead of relying on your laptop’s built-in webcam.
One thing to note is that this method will only work if you have a Windows PC as the utility from Canon is not currently available for Mac.
Follow the steps below to use a Canon DSLR camera as a webcam on your PC or laptop.
Step 1: open
Canon EOS Webcam Utility page
on your PC and then select your camera model to download the utility. Proceed to install the utility on your PC and restart your PC once everything is done. The following is a list of Canon DSLR and PowerShot cameras that are supported by the EOS Webcam Utility and can be used as a webcam.
Step 2: Take your Canon camera, turn it on, and set it to Film mode. Depending on which Canon DSLR you have, you will need to rotate the mode selector dial to an icon that looks similar to a cinema camera or simply switch between camera and movie modes using the dedicated button. After that, change the ISO level, shutter speed, etc., as per your requirement.
Step 3: Now proceed to connect your camera to PC using a miniUSB/microUSB or USB-C cable. After that, open the video calling app of your choice like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Open the app settings, find the camera options, and select the EOS Web Utility beta from the camera drop-down menu.
Step 4: Wait for a few seconds and the feed from your Canon DSLR will appear on your PC. Otherwise, make sure to exit the Canon EOS Utility application if you have it installed. If it still doesn’t work, exit the video calling app you are in and repeat the steps again.
You can now use your Canon camera as a webcam for your PC.
For Skype users please note that the versions of the application available in the app store and pre-installed on Windows 10 PCs do not work with the EOS Webcam Utility for several reasons. So, you need to download and use the Skype version available on the Microsoft website.
