If you’ve ever deleted photo albums by mistake or your smartphone accidentally deleted everything from your gallery, then you know that all kinds of ”bottomless abyss” feelings. Fear not – your lost photos aren’t really gone at all. We will show you how easy it is to recover photos on Android. There’s only one thing to remember: act fast.

Perhaps you have reached this article as a frantic search result after ‘Delete, delete, delete… oh no!’ in your gallery. Don’t worry, it’s not too late! If you’re just curious about what might have happened to your photos, then we can also advise you on how to back them up so you don’t have to go through this panic again.

How to recover deleted photos with the app

First, head over to the Play Store and grab the DiskDigger photo recovery and then run the app. There are several apps on the Play Store that claim to recover deleted photos, but after our investigation, DiskDigger is not only more reliable, but also less annoying when it comes to serving ads.

It is very helpful, once you have the app, to then turn off the Wi-Fi and data connections on your phone. The reason for doing this is when data is deleted, whether photos, music or documents, it is not actually deleted until something has been written on it in the device memory.

Notes: On non-rooted devices, DiskDigger is limited to recovering images from your thumbnail cache, meaning that images will likely be of lower quality than the original photo or video. Restoring the original version of a full resolution photo or video is only possible by rooting your device. If you don’t know how to rotate your phone, check out our complete guide on how to root Android to get started.

If you recently deleted your photos, DiskDigger should be able to find them, and you’ll be given the option to restore them to a folder on your device, or back them up to a cloud service.

At first, it seemed like DiskDigger couldn’t find our photos, but quickly entering their settings and unchecking the minimum file size factor revealed our deleted photos. We should also note at this point that if you want to recover your photos, you will need the Pro version of the app, which is available below.

After restoring your photos, you have to make sure this will never happen again. And we all know prevention is better than cure.

How to back up your photos on Android

Now that we have explained how to recover deleted photos on Android, the next step is to prevent this situation from happening again. To do this, we recommend using an app like Google Photos. It offers unlimited photo storage (as long as the files aren’t too large) and the backup function is easy to set up.

After installing the app, simply go to its Settings, then Backup & sync, and you can choose how often – and by what method – you want to back up your photos.
