As you know, there is no built-in way to record phone calls using your iPhone. As a result of state and state-specific laws, Apple doesn’t make it easy to record phone calls.
However, it is not impossible. You can record iPhone phone calls using several workarounds.
If you’re going to use one of these methods, make sure you tell the person on the other end of the call that they’re being recorded. As long as they know and agree. If you are looking for a way to record iPhone calls secretly, you should consider the possible legal ramifications.
How to Record Calls on iPhone Without Apps
This is probably the fastest, easiest, and “dirtiest” way to record phone calls from your iPhone. You’ll need another device with a recording-capable microphone (such as an iPad, computer, or portable recording device) to make this work. Check recommendations our podcasting microphone if you do not have a suitable device for this.
As long as you’re in a quiet environment and can use your iPhone’s speakerphone, it’s easy to do:
- Call your contact and tap the icon Speaker. If you have Bluetooth headphones connected, you will need to select iPhone speaker from the list.
- Let the other party know that you will be recording the conversation. On your external recorder, start recording.
- Place your phone close enough to the microphone so that when you talk, it can hear your voice clearly too.
- Save the recording when your phone call is over.
On iOS devices, you can record calls using the app Voice Memos Apple. On a Mac or PC, we recommend hard work audio editing and recording Audacity.
Record Incoming iPhone Calls Using Google Voice
Using Google Voice requires the Google Voice app, which is available for the web, as well as Android and iOS devices. One of the benefits of this app is its ability to record phone calls. Before you can do this, you need to spend some time setting up the service:
- Download app Google Voice for iPhone, open it, and sign in using your Google account.
- Tap Search and select the new phone number you want to associate with your Google Voice account.
- Confirm your number, then press Next until you are asked to enter your phone number.
- Enter your iPhone phone number, confirm, then wait for the verification code.
- Verify your new Google Voice settings using the code you just received.
There is one final step that you must complete before you can record calls. open Google Voice website and sign in to your Google account if necessary. Now click the gear icon at the top right of the page to open the menu Settings.
Here, select the tab menu Calls on the left side of the page. Scroll down until you see Incoming call options, then make sure this setting is enabled.
Now when you receive a phone call through your Google Voice account, you will be able to press the button 4 on your iPhone to start recording the conversation. When you do this, Google will notify the other party that they are being recorded. You’ll find your recording in your Google Voice inbox, where you can download it for safekeeping.
Unfortunately, there is no way to record outgoing phone calls using Google Voice.
Use Third Party Apps To Record Phone Calls
There are all sorts of third-party iPhone call recorders available. One of the free call recorder apps for iPhone is Rev Call Recorder. Getting started with this is easy.
First, download and open the app. You’ll need to confirm your phone number by adding it when prompted and entering the code you received. The process is a little tricky, but thankfully the app offers a built-in tutorial.
When you’re done, tap Start Recorded Call, then select Outgoing Call or Incoming Call. For outgoing calls, you need to call the Rev Call Recorder service, then call the person you want to talk to as well. After both calls are connected, tap the button Merge Calls to start recording.
For incoming calls, the process is slightly different, but it’s as simple as that.
Once the call is complete, the Rev will contact you when your recorded call is ready to download. This is the point at which the app will offer additional services (which cost money) as well, but these are all optional.
The main advantage of Call Recorder is that unlike many other call recording services, the person you are talking to will see your phone number instead of an unknown number. Of course, your calls are stored on the servers of other companies, so you may not want to use this service for personal or sensitive matters.
Rev is far from the only call recorder for iPhone. For more options, we have collected some More iPhone call recording apps.
How to Record Calls on iPhone Using Your Voicemail
This last method is very much up to your carrier to find out if it works and how precisely it benefits. First you need to check if your carrier allows you to download your voicemail messages (a feature introduced in iOS 9).
Open the app Phone on your iPhone and tap tab Voicemail in the lower right corner. If you see a list of voicemail messages appear, that’s great! You can download it and save it on your device, so this method is useful for you.
If you only see options Call Voicemail, you are not that lucky. You can still try this method, but your recording will get stuck in your carrier’s voicemail inbox. You’ll have to find another way to store it externally perhaps using the speakerphone method we discussed above.
To continue with this method, here’s what you need to do:
- Call your contacts and tell them you want to record the call. Ask them to hold the line for a moment.
- On your iPhone, tap the button Add Call to start a three-way conversation.
- Call your own phone number. If it goes well, you should go straight to your own voicemail box.
- Wait for the voicemail greeting to finish, then tap Merge Calls to start the conference.
Your conversation should be recorded as a message that you can retrieve from your voicemail inbox. If you can see individual voicemail messages under the Phone app, you can download calls for safekeeping.
Which iPhone Call Recording Method Works For You
The two most reliable ways to record phone calls on your iPhone are using the speakerphone method or paying for a third party service to record calls for you. In either case, to operate legally, you must always ensure that you tell the other party that you are recording it.
