How to Record Audio From Websites on Your Mac

By | May 1, 2022

You can record audio clips from websites using different applications on your Mac. We’ll show you how.

Recording audio from websites on a Mac is tricky as there are usually no download options available. You can use your Mac’s built-in microphone and speakers, but they also tend to pick up on the noise around you.

Instead, we recommend that you use a virtual audio driver in conjunction with a native audio recording application, such as QuickTime Player. We’ll show you how to record audio from any browser on your Mac below.

Preset BlackHole Audio Driver For Your Mac

Before we start using native apps to record audio from websites, you must first install a virtual audio driver.

Using a virtual audio driver, such as BlackHole, lets you capture sound from internet browsers and other applications on your Mac. This creates a virtual referensi between the audio output going to your speakers and your Mac’s audio input. It allows you to route audio from the browser directly to the recording app on your Mac.

After you register on the site BlackHole, you’ll get an email with a download referensi giving your app two options: a two-channel or a 16-channel version. Choose to install the two-channel package, as that should suffice.

After you install it, you may have to restart your Mac.

After rebooting your Mac, you will be able to select the BlackHole audio driver as sound input and output whenever you want to record audio from websites.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Click icon Apple in the top left corner of the menu bar and select System Preferences.
  • Click Sound.
  • Click on tab Output and select BlackHole from the list that appears.
  • Finally, click on the tab Input and select BlackHole.

Since it’s a virtual audio driver, you don’t have to worry about external sound being recorded. While BlackHole audio drivers usually work flawlessly, you should pay attention to the following quirks:

  • Whenever you want to record audio, you have to select the BlackHole audio driver as sound input and output.
  • You will not hear any audio while recording it.

Switching to the BlackHole audio driver is a hassle. To make it easier, create an Automator workflow or write an AppleScript and automate the process with a keyboard shortcut.

After installing BlackHole, use one of these two apps to record audio from a web browser on your Mac

QuickTime Player

In addition to playing media files on your Mac, QuickTime Player can record audio, video, and even the screen of your Mac. For recording audio, you get the basic options: record button, volume control, and file size counter.

To use QuickTime Player to record audio from websites, you must first select the BlackHole audio driver to route audio from your inputs to your outputs.

Then follow these steps to use QuickTime Player to record audio from websites in any browser:

  • open QuickTime Player.
  • Click File in the menu bar and select New Audio Recording.
  • Press the button Records when you are ready to record audio from the browser.
  • Press the button Stop after it finishes.

You can view the timer and file size for the recording in QuickTime Player.

After you finish recording, you can also preview it in QuickTime Player. If you want to trim the recording, go to Edit > Trim or press Cmd + T. Then drag the yellow handle on the trimmer bar to highlight the part you want to keep.

QuickTime Player lets you record audio for as long as you want. And you can save the last clip on your Mac or on an external drive.

Voice Memos

Voice Memos is the best native Mac app for recording, playing, and managing audio files in one place. It is available for all Macs running macOS Mojave and later.

Before you begin, select the Blackhole audio driver as your sound input and output, as shown above. Then follow these steps to use the Voice Memo app to record audio:

  • open Voice Memos.
  • Press the button Records when you want the app to start recording browser audio.
  • Press the button Done when you want to stop recording.

After you have recorded an audio clip, click on the recording to give it the name you want.

The Voice Memos app also lets you pause and resume recordings whenever you want. To edit an audio file, click the button Edit in the upper right corner of the application window to launch editing options. This allows you to trim the beginning or end of the recording.

You can also use the Boost button in the top right corner to suppress background noise captured in the recording.

The Voice Memos app does not limit the recording time and saves the audio recorded in the app. After that, you can share the recording with other apps.

If you want to access and move files recorded on your Mac, you need to launch Finder and press Shift + Cmd + G to open the window Go to Folder. Then type the following folder path:

~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.voicememos/Recordings

Once Finder opens the Recordings folder, your recordings will be organized in date order.

Easily Record Audio From a Browser on Your Mac

Now you know how to record audio from websites using QuickTime Player or the Voice Memos app on your Mac. You can test both apps before recording any real audio.

Both apps let you record audio from the browser and edit it. The Boost option in the Voice Memos app is useful for cleaning up background noise. Meanwhile, QuickTime Player gives you the flexibility to save your clips directly to an external drive.

Since the edit features in both apps are pretty basic, you might want to check out the best audio editors for macOS for more options.
