How to Quickly Create an Online Store Using Shopify

Learning how to create an online store using Shopify is not as complicated as you think. Whether you’re trying to make quick money dropshipping on Shopify, or you have a great product you’d like to sell, setting up a store using Shopify is one of your easiest options.

Shopify’s wide range of features make it perfect for professionals or beginners, and most people can set up their shop in less than a day. Are you ready for your store to go live? Let’s get started.

Sign up for Shopify
It’s easy enough to sign up for Shopify all you need is your email and store name. Keep in mind that Shopify won’t let you move from this step if you don’t have a completely original store name. You may have to change the name of your store a few times before finding one that no one else has.

Shopify will then ask you a few questions about whether you have an established business, or if you are just starting out. To continue to your main dashboard, you’ll also need to fill in your billing address.

Like most good things, Shopify is not free. You’ll get a 14-day free trial, which helps you set up your website before it starts being billed. Add Product
Now that you’ve signed up, Shopify will immediately ask you to add products to your store. If you already have an image of your product and a quick description, this will make your setup process a lot faster.

There are two ways you can add products to your store:

  • Enter the product manually.
  • Import them with a CSV file.

For now, let’s stick with the basics and add them manually.

Basic Product Information
Just enter your product name in the Title bar and add any key information about your product in the Description box.

Scroll down to find the section where you can insert your product image. Drag and drop an image of your choice or simply select Upload image. You may need some basic digital photography skills if you decide to take the photos yourself, but the beautiful results are worth it.

Pricing and Product Inventory
Here, you can add the price of a product. The section labeled Compare to price will show your price as a markdown.

For example, if you’re selling a discounted item for $20, and the original price was $50, type $50 into the Compare on prices section to show the price difference in your store. You can use for sales in your Shopify store.

If you don’t want to show markdowns, enter the same values ​​into the Prices section and Compare on prices.

Shopify can also track your inventory as long as you have the barcode, SKU and know how many products you have.

Add Variants

The Variants section shows the different variations your product may have. Variations can include anything from size, color, weight, and more.

Let’s say I sell white t-shirts in different sizes. I would enter “Size” under Option name and then add each size option under Option value.

As you type in the values, you’ll notice that you can change the price of each variant as well. Shopify lets you set specific prices for different colors, sizes, etc.

Combining SEO
SEO is one of the most important components when starting an online store, so you should take advantage of the search engine listing preview section. Add any SEO keyword in Meta description and create SEO-friendly title to attract more customers.

Create Collection

How can your customers find products in your store without scrolling through your entire catalog? Creating a collection makes shopping a lot easier for your customers.

A collection is a group of products that fall into the same category. For example, you would place a t-shirt in a collection titled “Short Sleeve T-shirts,” and you would place a discounted item in a collection called “Permissions.” When your customers search for something in a particular category, they can select a collection instead of scrolling endlessly through your site.

To create a collection, navigate to the left sidebar menu, find Products, and then click Collections. As you can see, Shopify has created a collection for you entitled “Home Pages.” These are featured products that your customers will see on your store home page. You want to add more collections than this, so click the blue Create collection button.

You can create collections manually or automatically. Automatically creating collections is much easier, especially if you have a lot of products.

However, for Shopify to automatically generate collections, you must add conditions. Enter a specific tag, title, or vendor, which distinguishes each product from one another.

For example, if you want to create a collection of t-shirts, you will need to tag each product with “T-shirt.”

Choose a Shopify Theme
Now it’s time to find the right theme for your Shopify store. Under the Sales Channel heading in the sidebar menu, go to Online Store > Themes. Shopify starts you off with a very basic theme called Debut.

You don’t have to stick with this theme, so scroll down and hit Visit Shopify Theme Store. The Shopify Theme Store includes both free and paid themes. From here, you can view the most popular themes and find themes based on your personal taste. While you can give $100 or more for a fancy theme, Shopify offers equally good free themes.

Find one you like? Click on it, select Add theme, and Shopify will install it to your dashboard (but it doesn’t activate the theme).

You’ll need to activate the theme yourself, so head back to the Online Store > Themes and scroll down to the More themes section. Find the name of the theme you just installed, hit the Action dropdown menu and then select Publish.

Customize Your Theme
If you don’t like the way your site is set up, don’t worry. You can change your store layout by customizing your theme.

Start by adding a photo to your home page that represents your company. Upload your own photos or use one of Shopify’s high-quality free stock image libraries. Pair a photo with some text that captures your brand and draws people to your store.

Your home page has several different features that you can include. Add image galleries, slideshows, featured products, newsletters, testimonials, videos and more.

To edit another page in your store, navigate to the dropdown menu at the top of the screen that says Home page. Choose to display your site’s pages, and start customizing your product pages, collections pages, 404 pages, carts, and blogs.

Create Domain

No one wants their store website to end with “” It looks unprofessional, and doesn’t scream “legitimate”. That’s why you have to create a domain for your website and find a host.

Luckily, Shopify makes this very easy. While you can take the time to research the best web hosting services, why bother when Shopify has a full web hosting and domain plan? Go to Online Store > Domains and click Buy new domain.

Type in the domain you want to check if it is available. You might want a “.com” extension, and Shopify will charge you $14 per year for it.

Manage Payment
Shopify gives you several options when it comes to payment. To customize your payment, go to Settings in the left menu bar of your dashboard, and select Payment Provider.

You can choose to stick with Shopify, PayPal, and Amazon Pay or choose one of several other payment options. Each payment service comes with the most basic Shopify plan price taking 2.9% of each transaction plus 30 cents.

Go Live With Shopify
If you have passed all these steps, then you are ready to open your shop!

By default, your store is password protected, meaning that no one can access your store without entering the password. Disable this by going to Online Store > Preferences and unchecking the box that says Enable password. You can only do this if you have selected a Shopify plan.
