Is Windows 11 getting silent on you? Here’s how to fix it.
If all the sounds suddenly disappear on your Windows 11 PC, it may be difficult to find the cause. Fortunately, there are some common causes that you can investigate, such as incorrect audio output device configuration, missing sound device drivers, and faulty audio enhancements.
Having said that, let us go through the process of troubleshooting a Windows 11 PC without audio.
Check If You Have Muted Your Audio
Some Windows laptops have a dedicated mute button. You can sometimes disable your device by mistake, or it may happen automatically by mistake. Often the mute button is equipped with an indicator to show whether the device is in mute mode.
If you have a multi-function mute button, use the button Fn + Mute button to ring your device. You can also unmute your device by activating the volume slider in Action Center.
Check If the Right Audio Output Device is Selected
Windows 11, by default, uses system audio as the output device. If you have multiple audio devices connected to your computer, make sure that the correct audio device is selected.
To change the default audio output device in Window 11:
- Press the button Windows + I to open the app Settings.
- In tab System, click Sound.
- Under section Output, select your default audio device.
Alternatively, you can also quickly change the default audio output device from the Action Center.
To change the sound output device from the Action Center:
- Click on the icon Speaker on the taskbar.
- In Action Center, click Manage Audio Devices (arrow icon) next to the volume slider. This will display all the audio equipment connected to your system.
- Select the audio output device you want to set as the default.
Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Windows 11 comes with a built-in audio troubleshooter. These days, Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter is quite effective at finding and fixing common problems.
To run the Windows audio troubleshooter:
- Click Start and select Settings.
- In tab System, click options Sound.
- Scroll down to Advanced section under Audio.
- To Troubleshoot common sound problems, click Output devices.
- Windows will scan for available sound output devices. Select the device you want to troubleshoot and click Next.
- The troubleshooter will scan for issues related to faulty device drivers and configurations and recommend some fixes. Then, apply the fix and check if there is an improvement.
Disable Audio Enhancements
When enabled, the Audio Enhancements feature in Windows 11 automatically improves sound quality. It is disabled by default to prevent sound issues with incompatible devices.
If you recently changed the properties of your audio device, check and disable Audio Enhancements to undo any changes.
To disable audio enhancement in Windows 11:
- Press the button Windows + I to open Settings.
- In tab System, click Sound.
- Next, click on your audio device from the list to open Properties.
- On screen Properties, scroll down to section Enhance audio.
- Toggle the switch to turn off audio enhancement for your device.
- Next, click the informasi Advanced and check the box Disable all enhancements.
- Click OK and Apply to save changes.
Uninstall and Reinstall Audio Device Driver
Corrupt or outdated device drivers often malfunction and cause sound related problems in Windows 11. You can reinstall the audio device driver to restore the drivers to their working state.
To uninstall the audio device driver:
- Press the button Windows + X to open the menu WinX.
- In the WinX Menu, select Device Manager.
- In the Device Manager window, expand the section Audio inputs and outputs.
- Locate and right-click on the audio device you want to troubleshoot.
- choose Properties from the context menu.
- In the Properties window that opens, go to the tab Driver.
- Click Uninstall Device. Next, click Uninstall again to confirm the action.
- Once removed, restart your PC. Windows will automatically reinstall the device during the restart.
After restart, check if the audio device is working and listed among other audio devices. If not, open Device Manager, then click Action, and select Scan for hardware changes.
Windows will now look for devices that are connected but not detected and reinstall the necessary drivers.
Update Audio Device Driver
If you have a problem with your audio output device driver, updating it to the latest available version may help. Driver updates for hardware often include bug fixes and improvements to get your device back to working flawlessly.
You can update device drivers manually using Device Manager or by using a third-party driver updater for Windows. Here’s how to do the first one:
- Press Windows, then search and open Device Manager.
- In the window Device Manager, expand section Audio inputs and outputs.
- Right click on your audio device and select Driver Updates.
- choose Search automatically for drivers. Windows will download and install the latest version available (if available).
- Once installed, restart your PC and check if there is a fix.
Install Latest Windows 11 Update
If this is a widespread issue, Microsoft will likely release a hotfix to address the issue. Sometimes, regular Windows updates also contain bug fixes for plugging known audio issues on your PC.
open Start > Settings > Windows Updates. Click button Check for updates, and scan for pending updates. If available, download and install any or all available updates for your system.
Restart Windows 11 Audio Services
The above audio troubleshooter during scan checks if critical audio services are running. However, you can also restart it manually to verify its working status.
Here’s how to do it:
- Type service in the Windows search bar and open the application Services.
- In the window Services, find the following services:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Check Your Audio Device for Hardware Problems
Try connecting your external speakers or Bluetooth headset to another device where you can play them. By doing so, you can determine if the problem is with your PC or audio device.
If you are using wired headphones, try using a USB Audio adapter to troubleshoot a faulty audio jack. If you have USB powered speakers, try changing the port.
If you are using only the system speakers, try connecting Bluetooth or wired headphones. This will allow you to determine if your laptop’s integrated speakers are faulty.
Perform a Factory Reset Using Reset This PC
As a last resort, try resetting your PC to factory defaults with the Reset This PC option. It allows you to reset Windows 11 to factory defaults by saving or deleting your personal files. However, the reset process will delete all third-party apps installed on your PC.
To reset Windows 11 to factory defaults:
- Open the app Settings by pressing the button Windows + I.
- In the left pane, go to the tab Windows updates.
- Under More options, click Advanced options.
- On page Advanced options, scroll down to Additional options.
- Next, click Recovery.
- Click button PC Reset for Reset this PC.
- In the window Choose an option, click Keep my files.
- Next, select Local Reinstall or Cloud Download.
- Read the description under Additional settings and then click Next. Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for your Windows 11 to reset successfully.
Troubleshooting Audio Problems in Windows 11
Problems with sound output are not exclusive to Windows 11. However, the solution is usually the same across editions. By changing the audio driver, running the Windows audio troubleshooter, and double-checking that you didn’t accidentally turn off your device, you’ll be able to get your audio back to normal in no time.
