How to Enable or Fix Bluetooth in Windows 10

How to Enable Bluetooth in Windows 10

Turn on Bluetooth Using Action Center

You can enable and disable Bluetooth by using the appropriate tiles in the Windows Action Center.

To access the Action Center, click the icon that looks like a speech bubble on the right side of the taskbar. You may need to click Expand to reveal the full list of tiles if Bluetooth is not immediately visible.

Click icon Bluetooth, and the tile will turn blue to indicate that it is enabled. The tile will also display a message Not Connected, or the name of the device your computer is connected to.

Turn on Bluetooth Using the Settings Menu

You can also enable Bluetooth in Windows 10 by using the Settings menu. To do so, follow the simple step-by-step instructions below:

  • Open menu Start.
  • Click on the icon Settings on the left side of the menu.
  • open Devices > Bluetooth and other devices.
  • Find the switch Bluetooth.
  • Swipe to position ON.

No matter which approach you use to enable Bluetooth in Windows, you will see the Bluetooth icon appear on the taskbar once it is turned on. You can use it to quickly access Bluetooth settings, send files, and pair new devices.

How to Pair a Bluetooth Device in Windows 10

Once you have Bluetooth enabled in Windows and the device you want to connect to, it’s time to pair.

You only need to perform the pairing procedure on one of the two devices. Since this article is Windows based, we will only look at how to perform tasks in Windows.

To create a Bluetooth pairing on Windows, follow the steps below:

  • Open menu Settings.
  • Go to Devices > Bluetooth and other devices.
  • Click Add Bluetooth or other device at the top of the right-hand panel.

A new menu window will open. Select the first option from the list titled Bluetooth. Windows 10 will automatically start searching for nearby devices that can connect to it. Allow up to 30 seconds to complete the scan and Windows to find all available options.

To connect with a device, click on its name. If this is your first time connecting to the device, you may have to go through a verification procedure. This involves ensuring that the PIN code on your Windows machine matches the PIN code displayed on the device you are trying to connect to.

Assuming the PIN codes match, click Connect. If you press the button too long, the PIN code will expire, and you will have to restart the process. You may also need to press the Pair button on the device you are connected to.

(Notes: You can also right-click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar and select Add a Bluetooth device from the context menu. This will let you see the same Add Device screen as you see when using the Settings menu approach.)

How to Remove a Bluetooth Device in Windows 10

Now you know how to activate Windows 10 Bluetooth and pair your computer with external devices. However, it is also important to understand how to cancel an existing Bluetooth connection.

Managing your list of paired devices is wise. If you let the list get too large, you will lose track of which device you are using and potentially expose yourself to Bluetooth-based security vulnerabilities.

To unpair unused Bluetooth, you must return to the Windows Settings menu.

  • Open the app Settings.
  • Navigate Devices > Bluetooth and other devices.
  • In the right pane, scroll down the list of Bluetooth connections until you find the one you want to delete.
  • Click on the device name to highlight it.
  • Press the button Remove device.
  • Agree with the on-screen confirmation.

If you want to reconnect to the device in the future, you must create a new connection.

Turn on Bluetooth in Windows: Advanced Settings

There are some advanced Bluetooth settings in Windows 10 that you should know about.

To view it, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth and other devices, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on More Bluetooth Options. A new window will open.

Select tab Options, and you’ll see the Bluetooth settings you can set:

  • Allow Bluetooth devices to find this PC: If you want to leave your Bluetooth connection active, but don’t want new devices to see it (for example, if you use a computer in a public area), uncheck the checkbox.
  • Alert me when a new Bluetooth device wants to connect: You must leave this option enabled if you are performing the installation process from an external third-party gadget.
  • Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area: If you leave Bluetooth turned on all the time, you may want to disable this option, so that the Bluetooth icon doesn’t clutter up your taskbar.
