How to Create and Use the Cell Style Feature in Excel

You can apply cell formatting in one step by using the Cell Style feature offered in Microsoft Excel. The Cell Style feature allows data to stand out in the worksheet and change according to the theme applied to the worksheet. You can also manually format cell styles, which you can later use elsewhere on the worksheet.

Cell Styles incorporate formatting characteristics such as font, font size, cell borders, cell shading and number formatting.

You can create frequently used Styles by using the formatting attributes. You can then easily create a worksheet with consistent formatting. You can create and name a Style so you can reference and use it easily.

How to Create and Use the Cell Style Feature in Excel

To use the Cell Style feature in Microsoft Excel, follow the method below.

1. Apply a Style to the Selected Cell

  • Click cell which you want to format.
  • On tab Home in the group Styles, click button Cell Styles.
  • In the Cell Styles gallery, click style what do you want.

2. Create Cell Styles Based on Formatted Cells

  • Click cell which has the formatting you want to save as a style.
  • On tab Home in the group Styles, click button Cell Styles.
  • In the Cell Styles gallery, click options New Cell Styles.
  • The Style dialog window will appear.
  • In the Style dialog window, name the style and you have the option to uncheck from the checkbox any elements you don’t want to include in the style.

3. Create Cell Styles from Scratch

  • On tab Home in the group Styles, click button Cell Styles.
  • In the Cell Styles gallery, click an option New Cell Styles.
  • In the Style dialog window, enter style name in the box Style name and click Format.
  • The Format Cell dialog window will appear.
  • In the dialog window, you can define custom cell style properties on the Number, Alignment, Font, Border, Fill, and Protection tabs.
  • Then click OK in the Format Cells window.
  • And click OK again in the Style dialog window.
