Wondering how to connect iPhone to TV? We show you several methods to do this easily.

It’s very convenient to enjoy online content on your iPhone screen, but smaller screens get old quickly. Even with iPhone Plus or Max models, watching videos longer than a few minutes is no fun.

However, you don’t have to suffer through this; easy to use different views. If you’re wondering how to connect your iPhone to your smart TV, we’ll show you the various ways.

Who Is This Guide For

Before we begin, it’s important to know why you need to connect your iPhone to a TV. We assume most people do it to stream movies, TV shows, or view their own photos and videos on a big screen. It is these uses that we focus on in this guide.

What we didn’t focus on was mirroring your iPhone or iPad screen onto the TV to use the iOS device on your desk, for example. If that’s what you’re looking for, we have a guide for mirror iPhone or iPad screen to your TV.

How to Connect IPhone To TV Wirelessly

If you want to connect your iPhone to your TV wirelessly, the easiest way is to use AirPlay. However, you should check the TV and other home theater setup you are using to make sure they are compatible.

Apple’s Apple TV is one of the easiest ways to add AirPlay to your TV, but it’s not the only way. Some TV manufacturers make TVs with built-in AirPlay streaming support. These manufacturers include Samsung, Vizio, and TCL.

If you don’t have an AirPlay-enabled TV and don’t want to buy an Apple TV, you’re not out of luck. There’s an AirPlay receiver that lets you stream to your TV wirelessly and costs less than the Apple TV. Look our collection of cheap AirPlay receivers for some recommendations.

Once your TV is ready for AirPlay streaming, the rest of the process is pretty straightforward. The most popular streaming apps include support for AirPlay. In one of them, select what you want to watch, then tap AirPlay icon at the top of the screen.

Depending on how many AirPlay-enabled devices you have at home, you might see several options. Your TV should be easy to spot.

One caveat to this approach is that not all iOS apps include support for AirPlay. If you want any of these to show on your TV, you will need to use one of the two methods below.

How to Connect IPhone To TV Via HDMI

If you want to connect your iPhone to a TV with HDMI, you’ll need a few items. The first is the free HDMI port on your TV, which is relatively easy to come by. In the worst case scenario, all you need to do is temporarily unplug everything else.

In addition to the free HDMI port, you may need to purchase some accessories. The first is a spare HDMI cable, assuming you don’t already have one. You also need Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter. This will cost you about $50.

All you need to do is plug the adapter into your phone, plug the HDMI cable into the adapter, then plug the other end of the cable into a free HDMI port on your TV. Using this method, streaming apps are limited to 1080p, so if you want 4K, you can’t use this method.

It’s also important to note that using this method causes a slight delay between what your phone is showing and what’s showing on the screen. If you only use your iPhone to watch Netflix or similar apps, this shouldn’t be a problem. On the other hand, you won’t be able to play iOS games on the big screen this way, because it’s too slow.

How to Connect IPhone To TV Via USB

Connecting your iPhone to the TV by USB might be a bit of a misnomer. The iPhone doesn’t support USB, as it uses Apple’s proprietary Lightning format instead. The method above is basically the same as connecting via USB, only using lighting.

Nonetheless, if you happen to have a Plug and Play USB cable lying around, you might be able to use it. The Plug and Play cable has one side that plugs into your phone, while the other side has HDMI and USB connectors. Both of these plugs into your TV.

This method is not as reliable as using Apple’s proprietary AV adapter, so we only recommend trying it if you already have the cable. You don’t want to spend money on a new cable only to find out that it’s not working the way you planned – or worse, not working at all.

You’ll also sometimes see a USB dock with iPhone compatibility that can be connected to the TV. These can be useful, but many of them are limited in their functionality. For example, many of these docks only produce 720p video. They’re also getting harder and harder to find, so this is another option we recommend just trying if you already have one.

How to Connect Any Phone to Your TV

Using one or more of the methods we’ve described here, you can now connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV. Therefore, depending on your setup, you may need to go through some additional hoops for things to work. We also haven’t covered every possible option, such as using a Chromecast device.
