While texting from your phone can be quick and easy, having long conversations can tire you out with the on-screen keyboard. Luckily, most of the popular messaging apps out there offer some sort of desktop option, allowing you to easily take your conversations from your phone to your computer and back again.
To use WhatsApp on your computer, you must have an account set up on your phone. open web.whatsapp.com on your computer and open WhatsApp on your phone. To log into your WhatsApp account, you will need to scan the QR code in your browser using the mobile app.
open Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop > Scan QR Code.
Once scanned, you can view your most recent messages and contacts, and send and receive messages on your computer. You can also use the web version of the app to send your own files to and from your phone.
All computers that you are logged into will be viewable in your WhatsApp application. You can see the last time you were active on each machine, and can log out of all computers at once. However, you cannot selectively exit certain machines.
Like WhatsApp, you can use the Telegram messaging app in your browser by going to web app. You will be asked to sign in using your phone number. You need to have Telegram installed on your phone so that you can receive app notifications with a login code that you need to enter on your computer.
After entering that code, you will have an interface similar to WhatsApp. You can view your conversation list, view your contacts and settings, and create new Telegram groups.
If you’re a Mac and iPhone user, you can use Apple’s native messaging app on both your phone and Mac computer. What’s great about the desktop version is that not only can you use it with other iPhone users, but you can also send text messages to non-iPhone users from your computer.
To do so, go to Settings > Messages on your iPhone, and make sure Text Message Forwarding is turned on for your computer.
You can pick up where you left off with existing conversations, start new conversations with contacts or groups, delete messages and threads, search for your messages, send photos and files, and send the full list of Apple emojis. You can also compose messages using voice commands using Siri on your Mac.
Unlike WhatsApp and Telegram, Viber requires you to download a desktop client, but that means you’ll get much more powerful features. The desktop client is available for Windows and above and Mac OS X 10.7 and above.
