Want to start using the viral short video app TikTok? Here’s an easy way to post your first video

If you’ve been thinking about getting on TikTok for a long time, now is the time to join. Stay around.

We will help you download the app and make your first video with this step by step guide.

What is TikTok

Officially launched in 2016, TikTok is another trending social media app, available for both Android and Apple devices.

The platform sees users share short-form video content with followers. TikTok has a huge music and sound library that you can add to your videos. Like all the best social platforms, once you have an account, you can follow, like, comment, share and create your own content.

TikTok is very popular on the app store, with over a billion downloads before the end of 2020. TikTok is ranked Top Free App on Google Play and Top Entertainment App on Apple store.

When you’re ready to download it, search for TikTok in the app store of your choice or click on one of the following links.

Before You Post: Create Account First

You won’t be able to post videos to TikTok without an account, so that’s the first order of business once you download the app.

When you first open the app, it will ask you to create an account. Select the information you want to use to sign in (phone, email, Facebook, Apple, Google, or Twitter).

Follow the prompts to enter your information, select your interests, and decide whether or not you want to receive notifications. TikTok will send you a code via text or email to validate your account, instead of creating a password.

Then you will be ready to start browsing. From makeup tutorials to cooking, to parents embarrassing their kids and short-form comedy, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. All you have to do is swipe up to scroll through the random videos the app has selected for you.

Getting Started: How to Use TikTok

While you are watching a video, you will see an icon listed on the right side. At the top is the profile picture of the person you’re watching. If you like the video, click on the image or swipe left on the video and click Follow/Follow. Under the button Follow/Follow, you can scroll down to see more videos of that person.

Click the heart-shaped icon to “like” the video, the speech button to comment, and the arrow to share. Hit the album icon at the bottom if you like the video’s background music. There, you’ll see more videos playing the same song.

At the bottom of the screen, you will see more icons to help you navigate the application. Press Home/Home to return to videos TikTok recommends for you, based on your interests. If you click Discover, you can type in the search bar to find relevant videos, and filter by popularity, background sound or hashtags used.

The next step is to set the length of your video. Videos used to be limited to 15 seconds, but now the app also has 60 second video recording and TikTok might add longer videos in the future.

Select 60s or 15s to determine the length of your video.

Press Record button big red to record your video directly through the app and release to stop recording. You can combine multiple clips for your video, so you can press the red button again to resume recording from the part you left off.

When you finish recording, click the red check mark to save

You can also select the button Upload/Upload right button to select a video from your phone’s gallery if you have a pre-recorded video you’d like to use.

Add Music or Sound to Your TikTok Videos

Tab Effects lets you add visual effects, as well as transitions and timing effects such as slow motion.

When you have added the desired effect to your clip, tap Save to return to the editing window.

Add Description

Once you’ve added all the effects, edits, and clips you want for your video, you can move on to descriptions and posts.

Tap Next/Next in your video to go to the description page. Here you can add text to describe your video, as well as add a hashtag or tag a friend.

Press Select Cover if you want to show a different thumbnail of your video and remember to Save.

At this point, you can return to the previous page to edit your clip by adding effects, filters, and more. But this brings us to the final step.
